Heroic Nurse Who Contracted Ebola in Dallas is Identified

The first person to contract Ebola in the U.S. has been identified as Nurse Nina Pham. Nurse Pham was infected with Ebola while caring for Thomas Erik Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas Texas. Pham's infection was determined in the very early stages which should give her a better chance of survival. She is currently in stable condition. The C.D.C. is still investigating to find the cause of infection. It is presumed that a momentary lapse in infection protocol is the culprit. Dr Frieden, head of the C.D.C. has apologized to Nina Pham and Texas Health Presbyterian hospital if he sounded overly critical in his remarks on the subject yesterday.      The Ebola Protocols must be very hard to follow. The slightest breach could mean infection. Health care workers need  to practice removing contaminated protective gear without infecting themselves in the process. We as a nation have never generally had to deal with the extreme protocols that Ebola requires. The C.D.C. needs to perfect these protocols and provide a standard operating procedures that will be implemented nation wide. Our health care system does very well with the current universal precautions that are practiced nationwide. These precautions were put in practice to prevent the transmission of pathogens such as HIV. Ebola is different than any other pathogen we have seen in the general medical community. The potential for transmission is alarming. We as a nation need to look at this crisis as an opportunity to improve our universal precautions, while implementing procedures for safely eradicating highly infectious diseases.

Health Care Workers are our first line of defense when it comes to the war on Ebola. Nina Pham is a hero, as are all the doctors, nurses, and personnel who tried to save Duncan's life. Over the past decade we have looked at soldiers, firefighters, and law enforcement as heroes. It is now time to add health care workers who are fighting Ebola to the rank of Heroes. Look at the courageous doctors, nurses and health care workers in the infected countries in Africa. These people run into the proverbial burning building every day. They are literally putting their lives on the line every time they treat a patient that has Ebola. Let us all hope that proper Ebola precautions protocols can be implemented world wide.
